Full~Times

Full~Times was created as part of the redesign of the Burn~Août publishing house’s website and visual identity. This typeface builds on an existing free font, Free Serif, by adding inclusive glyphs that offer an alternative to the male/female gender binary in French. Free Serif was chosen as the basis for its strong resemblance to Times New Roman, which is still used as the default font in many proprietary softwares and in some web browsers. The challenge was therefore to create a new version of this default font, one that is free and moves towards greater inclusivity.

To represent this notion of typographic evolution, I chose to create the inclusive ligatures by stretching or compressing the serifs of the letters, thereby creating new glyphs resulting from mutations of the basic characters.
